‘Red yeast rice’ statin alternative not harmless either, study says

TUESDAY, Jan. 24, 2017 — A illegitimate cholesterollowering supplement called red ferment rice could pose the same freedom from disease risks to users as statin drugs, a novel study contends.

Red yeast rice could greaten risk of muscle injury or liver injury, Italian researchers reported after reviewing 13 years of unrepining data.

“These findings raise the hypothesis that the safety profile of red barm rice is highly similar to that of synthetic statins and warrants farther on investigations to finally characterize the security profile of red yeast rice,” the researchers concluded.

American love experts said it’s not surprising that the researchers discovered adverse reactions to red yeast rice that are similar to those produced ~ the agency of statins.

That’s because one of the compounds in red barm rice — monacolin K — has the same chemical form as the statin drug lovastatin, uttered Dr. Paul Thompson.

“Statins actually exist in nature, in fungi and molds and stow like that,” said Thompson, each American College of Cardiology fellow. “Patients want to know there is lovastatin in this product.” (Brand names for lovastatin are Mevacor and Altoprev.)

However, the newly come report only details 55 reports of hostile reactions during the entire study end. To Thompson, this indicates they are “a extremely rare problem.”

“It’s a violent outbreak in a teapot,” Thompson related of the new study.

Red leaven rice is concocted from yeast grown ~ward rice. U.S. sales of red leaven rice dietary supplements totaled about $20 the masses a year in both 2008 and 2009, the ~ numerous recent years for which data are profitable, according to the U.S. National Center as being Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration views red rising rice products containing more than sign amounts of monacolin K as unapproved renovated drugs, since they are chemically exactly the same to lovastatin, and cannot be sold legally to the degree that dietary supplements.

But dozens of red ferment rice products remain on the market. And products tested as recently at the same time that 2011 have been found to comprise monacolin K in substantial amounts, the NCCIH says.

For the repaired study, the Italian researchers reviewed direction data collected on natural health products between April 2002 and September 2015.

Reports of muscle punishment came from 19 patients, including some who experienced an increase in levels of creatine phosphokinase, some enzyme released when muscle tissue is damaged, the researchers reported.

Thirteen of 14 “serious” cases required hospitalization. Ten patients suffered liver detriment, the researchers found.

In addition, 12 patients reported gastrointestinal reactions that included upset stand, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

The researchers noted that muscle pain and liver harm are common side effects of statins, that countless people take to lower their cholesterol and their risk of heart attack and stroke.

But Thompson said the study doesn’t directly interlace the red yeast rice to some of these health problems.

“There’s ~t one way to be absolutely guaranteed settled that most of these cases were related to the red yeast rice,” he reported. Thompson is chief of cardiology at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut.

Patients with high cholesterol often buy red ferment rice over the counter when they’re concerned nearly the side effects of prescription statins, uttered Dr. Robert Eckel, a spokesman for the American Heart Association.

“You require to let them know that, well, you’re truly taking a statin,” said Eckel, who’s likewise a professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

The Council in opposition to Responsible Nutrition, a supplement manufacturer handicraft group, recommends that people talk by their doctor before taking red barm rice to lower cholesterol.

“For the unintelligent percentage of people who may get an adverse response to red leaven rice, a doctor can help to find out whether it can be tolerated, and grant that not, to seek other alternatives,” related Duffy MacKay. He’s the council’s older vice president of scientific and regulatory finances.

Some clinical trials have shown that population with a history of statin proscriptive seem to tolerate red yeast rice, Eckel uttered.

Thompson said he prescribes a more than middling amount of red yeast rice in his clinic being of the kind which a way to ease reluctant patients into statin handling.

But because it’s a appendix, the amount of active ingredient in red ferment rice can vary widely from mark to brand and even batch to batch, Thompson and Eckel said.

“The products are not because well-controlled and the dosages are mutable,” Eckel said.

Red yeast rice besides can prove expensive if taken regularly, inasmuch as it isn’t covered by security against loss, Thompson said.

“My advice is folks should take regular statins, even suppose that they have to take it at very low doses,” Thompson said.

The recently made known study appears in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.
