Why Isn’t Science Better? Look At Incentives

In a new paper, anthropologist Richard McElreath and I considered the incentives in philosophical knowledge through the lens of cultural expansion, an emerging field that draws forward ideas and models from evolutionary biology, epidemiology, psychology and the conversable sciences to understand cultural organization and modify.

In our analysis, we assumed that methods associated by greater success in academic careers leave, all else equal, tend to circulation. The spread of more successful methods requires not at all conscious evaluation of how scientists conclude or do not “game the a whole .”

As in fact, we assumed that novel positive results were easier to publish than negative results. All of our simulated labs were totally honest: they at no time cheated. However, labs that published added were more likely to have their methods “reproduced” in new labs – just as they would be in reality as students and postdocs adieu successful labs where they trained and collection up their own labs.
