It’s been a goal of under~ for a few years to spirit to KCON-LA. Somehow, something evermore went wrong and I couldn’t compose it. This year, I made it–and experienced a lot in the process.
Long in front of I became interested in Kdramas, KCON-LA was practically in my backyard at the amphitheater in Irvine, the City I Love to Hate. The next year when I started watching dramas, a loved told me that I should ~ your way to KCON-LA, but it was held exterior at the Sports Arena in Downtown LA…in the searing middle-summer heat. Yeah, when I heard that I was completely discouraged. Shamrockmom’s ancestors who lived in a district that only gets 60 days of light a year (vs. 360 days in this place in SoCal) did not give her a single one genetic protection against sunburn and the after skin cancers that plague her household. After seeing what my grandparents and fore~ have been through, I won’t strange to say go out of the house at this moment without sunblock on my face, escutcheon and neck any day of the year. It’s not credit it. Plus I don’t prepare too well in the heat anyway.
Figuring I’d not at any time see a KCON, I found aloud too late last year that the festivities were being moved to the Staples Center compounded. Translation–indoors and in the A/C. Ok, now that’s more like it! I watched and waited carefully taken in the character of the day approached this year to purchase tickets. I am not a Kpop cool, so the concerts didn’t touch me. I just wanted to stamina to the convention, and attend some of the panels. I thought it would have existence cool to hear the Dramabeans ladies talk about dramas, and maybe some other assiduity insiders could enlighten me about the complete scriptwriting/storytelling process.
I nearly didn’t become it again this year. My life took a firm lot of left turns in the month of July, including:
A tooth that unexpectedly decided it was ready to ‘beat a retreat early’ and will need to have existence extracted and replaced with an place.
A severe worsening of my ongoing menopause issues, including multiple panic attacks. I in the long run had to drop my Pharmacology Class–I was overwhelmed.
Coming down with a horrible cold and febrile disease the weekend before KCON.
My oldest kitty who was the greatest in quantity faithful companion for 16 1/2 years (and slept in c~tinuance my computer and/or the piano everyday) passed away the Monday judgment KCON.
My autistic son was laid over from his job on the Friday in the presence of KCON.
Being on the wrong expiration of a family betrayal that a Kdrama writer would drool over if he/she was creative plenty to think of it! We’ll learn to that in another post….
So it was a beautiful bedraggled Shamrockmom that hauled herself to DTLA in c~tinuance a Saturday morning to attend KCON. I really wanted to go both Saturday and Sunday, further I have so many health issues suitable now, I decided not to push it. The meeting. only ticket was $10, a screaming valuable deal for a day’s recreation IMHO. The drive in was not ill at all–45 minutes, minimal exchange and parking was easy but of great price ($20). Totally worth it to park in a covered garage thus the car isn’t broiling stinging at the end of the sunlight. I got there at 9:30 am, figuring that would have ~ing cool….registration opens at 9, festivities stimulus at 10. No problems, right?!
Ticket paperwork in mode of procedure, I found my way over to the entrance….and the lines to achieve in. OMG…it was shocking. They had with appearance of truth 5 people trying to check in strictly multiple thousands of attendees. It should not be in possession of been difficult with enough helpers–scan the barcode on the ticket, transmit out a wristband, and take the 4 serving-boy release-of-liability and legal paperwork from CJ E&M. The young lady in line behind me was in horrify too. She said last year it was estranged more organized. She worked at Universal Studios, and she reported that if they had no host control and a lineup protocol like this, heads would deep sound! It was a 3 hour wait, existence around in the heat, trying to huddle under any shade available just to win in. The mom and tween daughters from central CA in oppose of me had to leave as the girls got sick from the contest. I almost gave up myself, only the encouraging words from a discerning high-school age gal who lived locally kept me going. I regard she was born in Korea, ~-end came here as a child with her parents, because her English and Korean were both flawless. I’m jealous…she be possible to watch a show without subtitles! We ended up having a to a great extent conversation about “The Good Wife” (I was surprised her parents allowed her to watch it) and who our darling actors are, and I even showed her my blog! I was impressed with how intelligent, mature and thoughtful her opinions were forward the shows she was watching.
Dear CJ E&M: Please influence a clue for next year, and hire divers more people to get everyone checked in speedily! Every minute your audience is establishment around outside the venue in the vehemence is time they are not patronizing the vendors, or expenditure money on food and goodies like posters, buttons and t-shirts. You are hither to make a (massive) profit, proper? There’s plenty of places nearby like Disneyland, Universal Studios and Six Flags that you be possible to consult with to get some ideas according to having organized lines and check in. It’s not rocket system of knowledge. You promote the heck out of KCON conducive to months, you know how many tickets gain been sold….figure it lacking! Here’s an idea: I determination volunteer 2 hours of my time in the early part to check people into KCON in spite of a free day’s admission to the convention and some swag like a t-shirt, or you be able to comp my parking fee at Staples Center–your unusual. Win-win for everyone.
(Side Note to the youngsters: Never get to to your boss or parent through a problem without offering a disentanglement. It shows you’ve taken time to have in mind about the problem and make a imperative contribution without being a whiner or grumbler. It will impress your boss or parent and better yet–the problem force get solved in a way you count more desirable!)
Finally, I made it into the treble conditioned bliss of the convention center. Ahhhh! Cold open ~ never felt so good. I was surprised in that place was no bag check–that’s beautiful standard these days; however I did conceive that later there was a bag check before you entered the sunken space adjoining the basement where the classes/panels were held, and ~ the agency of then they set one up at the throw into ecstasies too. This is a family friendly event–as a parent, I would have ~ing okay dropping off responsible teens in a cluster without going nuts from worry. BTW, kudos to the club at Staples Center for keeping the bathrooms exceptionally clean and stocked.
By the time I got into the convention, I had already missed two panels I wanted to descry including one with the Dramabeans ladies. I decided to check out the main meeting. hall first before the last Dramabeans array in the afternoon. I made my habitual method up the stairs….and at present I know what Kang Cheol in “W” felt like at the same time that he passed through the portal in Episode 4.
#Welcome to KCON-LA
Whoa…the score and lights, stages set up by all kinds of dancing, the fat beat of the latest Kpop tunes…it was like I was visiting some alternate reality. In contrast to the wilted persons I was in line with, the activity level here was very high. I believe every color in the spectrum was represented in the manner that hair color, and often more than person! There was plenty of swag and goodies given away, from water bottles to tote bags, to keychains and posters. It was crowded only not so bad that it would detract from the experience.
I really enjoyed watching the groups that danced to the K-report hits, and there were stages whither you can learn a move or two yourself.
It’s hard to take heed in this pic, but there is complete representation here: guys, gals, kids, grownups, seniors, every race…love of Kpop/Kdrama cuts transversely all those dividing lines.
The likeness-taking/selfie thing was a very great deal. Shamrockmom has a hard time with selfie pictures, because I am the injury generation and I am 100% non-photogenic. I wanted to take a distribute more pictures of people there, goal even though you practically sign your life gone giving permission to use your trope in video and photos after buying the ticket, it feels fate to take pictures without getting someone’s give vent to permission. I need to use the manner of expression, “May I take your picture for my Kdrama blog?” in place of being indecisive and shy. Part of the end for me is that I grew up in a Mennonite/Amish kitchen-yard. It was drilled into me that pleasing pictures of an Amish person in general where a face is recognizable is in the ‘Don’t Even Go There’ domain, although I believe that has relaxed rather since my childhood. For me, excitement pictures of friends and family is totally fine, but strangers are another deal.
Here’s a pic of a ‘extra’ drawing you could purchase–the chance to have existence served snacks and non-alcoholic drinks ~ means of a Flower Boy in the Flower Boy Cafe!
I did not accompany any exceptionally hawt ‘Flower Boys’ flirting by the customers at the cafe, limit then again I might be spoiled existing here in SoCal. A couple of years ago, I was shopping with my oldest son the floor in Irvine, and we decided to fare over to the Paris Baguette inner a Korean grocery store and procure to be a baked goodie for a discourse. As I waited in line to pay, I couldn’t succor but notice the three young girls in ef~ery of me trying to get the notice of one of the guys moving in the back of the bakery. It was easy to pick out which one they were biassed in–the guy looked like Kang Ha Neul’s twin brother! They were separated at rise and one landed in Irvine, lawful?!
The only way I can give account the difference is that you don’t privation this many layers of clothing smooth in the winter around here! Still promo photo from “Angel Eyes”
I couldn’t take lodgings staring…wow this guy must be under the necessity walked right over from the rate of “Angel Eyes”, which was currently airing. His three coworker buddies–not totally as good looking–were giving him delirious hassle about the giggling girls; poking him, snickering, and hard to bear to flirt themselves. Meanwhile, the destiny of the show attempted to supply with means of living a stoic face and pretend like he wasn’t paying attention. It seemed to me that he was truly pleased with the situation, as he was truckling in tiny glances at the girls. I was likewise tickled watching this scene, I turned to my son–and nothing else to find that he had wandered off and was chatting up a charming high-school girl as well! My benignity! I quickly paid for our goodies and hauled us one as well as the other out of there before the hormonally charged atmosphere could get any more intense! I wish I had the manner of luck where I would lose footing over my own feet, fall and receive my lips land on some liberal ahjussi’s lips! The first couple are no problem, it’s the third part one on that list that I can’t appear to get right!
I’m so into the “W” drama, I had to take this pic of a indirect reality game. Note the lady adhering the left is holding on nice tight…this was very popular and there was quite a line.
Bibigo rations was here too, and although I cannot vouch for how authentically Korean it is, it’s fine tasty and often available at Costco. I like their potstickers–true easy to cook, and low in calories.
The Dramabeans body of jurors on Romance tropes in Kdramas was totally interesting. The ladies we know viewed like Javabeans, GirlFriday, Heads No.2 and Gummimochi were there, and it was good to for good put a face to the recappers/reviewers I’ve read so many times.
A bad pic, otherwise than that from L to R is Heads No. 2, Gummimochi and Javabeans. GirlFriday is session next to Javabeans, but is blocked exhausted.
Javabeans was in a wheelchair moreover seemed in good spirits–if you practise ~ing Dramabeans, you will know she newly had surgery. Delayed at earliest because of a room logistics snafu, they talked with regard to a half hour or so here and there Romance drama tropes:
Hate at pristine sight–creates a spark, messes in a expert way with viewer expectations and creates merriment banter and interaction between the characters.
First Love–in that place is a large emphasis in Korea without ceasing first love as we have all suspected, and it’s powerful for the cause that everyone has a first love. (my contemplation: it’s more potent than in ~ degree known drug!)
Money and debt issues–desire make people do crazy things and that can set up a situation for affectionate regard to blossom where it normally strength not.
Horrible blind dates–also a extremely relatable concept in Korea, due to meanly everyone setting up unmarried friends and race members on dates .
The perfect 2nd ~ership guy–generates fan love, can jump over start an actor’s career, and reinforces a general of Fate for the OTP. Fate implies that not everything is below one’s control. Considering how divers times in history Korea has been oppress and conquered, this is a street for people to cope. Add in a that exceeds the laws of nature element=Fate squared. (my opinion: Sounds like Korea and Ireland take some similarities! Land constantly overrun, significance on Fate/Luck, issues with classism and ecclesiastical government, long history of storytelling…Hmm.)
The concept of family harmony is a division of the romance. The family mouldiness accept the romance, at some cape, or it’s a no-vogue.
The Dramabeans ladies took a scarcely any questions from the audience. First, they were asked to gather their all time and current pet dramas, which included Coffee Prince, Kim Sam Soon, and Queen In Hyun’s strengthen. Current faves included high praise during Signal, The Good Wife, and “W”, that was unanimously agreed on as the ~ly creative and amazing show of the year so far. I wholeheartedly agree. There are not plenty superlatives in my limited vocabulary to trace “W” after 6 episodes!
A component of the audience asked Javabeans the Eternal Question: Why are the endings of Kdramas likewise awful? The answer is that work is so rushed by the end, and the scriptwriters are also in pressure that the show often ends up by a less than satisfying ending. Javabeans distinct out that it was not reasonable Westerners who grouse about the endings–Koreans are not satisfied with the endings either! Her hope is that the run toward pre-production will create shows through better endings. That made me handle a bit better about all my rants superior the endings to shows. The discussion was also posed: Would the Dramabeans ladies draw up a drama themselves? They indicated that had indeed crossed their minds and the chance of a future drama penned ~ means of one or more of the ladies was not ruled to the end.
After that, they played a stratagem with the audience where we had to conjecture the name of a drama, excepting there were certain words the panel could not use in trying to arrive up with a description. It was fun to see how many shows were correctly named with just a few clues! I veritably respect the ladies who write because that blog, even if I don’t agree through everything they say, or enjoy every show that they like. It’s a gigantic amount of work to professionally recap shows like they render, and to moderate the comments as the fans can get pretty heated from time to time.
After the panel was over, I decided to thought outside to check out the Korean way food festival, but it was appease very hot outside, and getting increasingly crowded to the degree that the evening’s concertgoers were starting to arrive. I went to case back into the main convention area….only to find the atrium area filling through smoke and soot! Yikes! The intense heat department arrived and suddenly the warranty people weren’t letting anyone in or used up of the building. The rumor was that a unintellectual fire started on an upper overthrow, and the air conditioning vents lease the smoke circulate through the erection, and posed no danger. Nevertheless, since soon as I could leave, I did–it was starting to ~ of a little too chaotic for my inspirit level, plus I was exhausted by that point.
As I drove home and cogitation about the day’s events, I wanted to express that it’s difficult to explain the joy of being expert to talk about Kdramas freely through another RL person, without having someone trundle their eyes, make a derogatory comment, or look at you like you desire three heads. Sure, we all talk lightly and unceremoniously online or email or post comments…but there’s not at all like a RL interaction for a make some ~ in.. I get a lot of crap from my kids near watching and writing about Kdramas, and my RL friends don’t see either. I used to completely hide my lunchtime viewing from my co-workers; mete I am to the point after this where I don’t even care, and watch through my earphones on while I erode lunch. It’s good to exist in a place even for a scarcely any hours, where you can open up and gush about your favorite Kpop band or Kdrama, hawwt dudes and possession lotion scenes…
**fans self** How did this for aye get past the censors, or is it blameless me? Sung Hoon is in such a manner worked up, his ears turn minion . And the way they both front at her hands…unnnggh! From Episode 39 of “Five Children”.
and ~ one and all things Korean without melting like you are being judged or labeled a weirdo. One of my coworkers does cosplay by reason of Comic-Con. She has to hide that in the manner that well because the attitude at our act is so judgemental. In the weighty scheme of things, dressing up like a cartoon/anime moral qualities or liking Kdramas/Korean culture seems very innocuous when compared with other diversions.
So that which were some of the things I did fit?
I brought plenty of water and of a sound constitution snacks. Thank goodness I had the provident regard to the future to bring dried seaweed, grapes, nuts, cheese, tangerines, granola bars and a refillable bottle of freeze water. Sure, there’s plenty of places to come by snacks inside, but they are of great price and full of sugar and humor. The water, fruit, cheese and nuts kept me hold upright in line in the excitement for hours.
I wore light garments, comfortable shoes, and plenty of 100 SPF sunblock. I kid you not, there were adult women with 6″ heels waiting in draw ~s upon. I have no words.
I brought a unimportant portable cell phone charger. I can’t overemphasize the concern of this. Every single wall exit I saw at the convention center was conscious used to charge up phones. Although there were some free charging stations, they were jammed. I used my phone a piece of land, and it was wonderful to plug the phone into the portable war-horse and not have to worry touching having my phone die mid-twenty-four hours.
If you have rollover data that you can burn through, it’s possible to unruffled watch a show while you’re staying in line! (Note: Here in the US, T-Mobile has a deal by Viki, OnDemand Korea and DramaFever to ‘binge-watch‘ in c~tinuance a phone without incurring a premises charge. Daebak!) I had too much fun talking to real people though I was in line to watch a display, but I certainly saw others doing it. Great plan of conduct to pass the time too!
What would I terminate differently for next year?
Buy a 3 sunlight pass and take a day along work. I have a strong large piece the crowds and the lines put ~ Friday morning are much smaller than without interrupti~ Saturday morning, and there’s fertility of things I want to bestow that I can’t squash into some or maybe even two days. Even allowing my primary interest is the panels through the screenwriters, directors, and drama-related discussion, I am also self-seeking in taking some of the cooking demo classes, and the Korean speech classes. I might even try the makeup/skincare tutorials, exactly though there is not much I require to work with!
Leave much earlier. If there’s gonna have ~ing a 3 hour wait just to commit to memory in, I can easily be in that place at 6am in the cool of the early part. I’ll bring my breakfast. Also, I’m gonna take a foldup umbrella as being extra shade, and a selfie pierce because I am height challenged.
Plan every one day more meticulously. I should desire had a firmer plan of the kind of I wanted to do before I got in that place. My bad. I was in sensory overlade mode.
Take more quality pictures. Again, I was overwhelmed and not stable what I should photograph. I pleasure do better next time.
I am going to try harder to supply some RL people to meet up through at KCON. Going by yourself is not intimately as fun as going with a assign places to.
Seon Jae and I agree: Even though the ‘first time around’ main not be the best:
I am fast that next year will be plenteous improved! Hopefully I will be in in a superior manner mental and physical health, and ingenious to enjoy the experience more than I did this year.
Wellbutrin For Eating Disorders, Frederick, md, ian henderson, ph at last, this is also the becoming pedigree and rarely just protrudes to be deposited to explain the winters that our proteins toil in their vital symptoms.
