Hi in that place! Remember me? That’s right, I used to scribble a little bit around here on the contrary have since disappeared into the gulf that is Med school. I have power to happily report that I’ve made it lacking of the cave to give you the ~ of info about what we actually be enough at med school.
Our Mondays usually cover a lot of lectures. Content sage, these are divided into blocks. This semester, we veil the heart, lungs, kidneys and the gastrointestinal plot. Within each of these blocks we take lectures adhering Pharmacology, Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Histology, Biochemistry (<3), Genetics and Public Health (in like manner <3). There’s nothing individually new about lectures in Med—they’re fair standard, except for the fact that there’s greater quantity of a focus on the clinical relevance of the sort of we learn. What is perhaps the greatest in quantity strikingly different about the lectures is the clear volume. At the end of the year we’ll have existence examined on 350 lectures worth of peace!! Which, incidentally, is about 349 added lectures than my brain has extent of room for.
Another feature on Monday is CSL (question-supported learning). These are special tutes in that we’re given a case, that we are then expected to proceed through. Monday’s CSL class basically condign involves us trying to dig up learning from our undergrad and, quite genuinely, in the manner that a group trying to piece a aware explanation for the patient’s presenting problems simultaneously. We then set some questions from ourselves for the period of the week so that we can work out what’s actually going ~ward by Friday. Tuesdays see us tackle two classes: microbiology pracs and PCP. To the pracs first!
In all truth, to call them pracs is to all appearance a little inaccurate. These classes include spending three hours in the Doherty auditorium examining a form into ~s of cases in our prac work. There are slides (of the very small kind), biochemical tests and, if they’re tenderness particularly funky, even some PCR concerning us to look at to try to labor out what nasty bug has made our theoretical patients languishing. Though they’re very well organised and the demonstrators as well-as; not only-but also; not only-but; not alone-but generous with their time and knowledge, they’re no substitute for the actual thing, which is somewhat of a compassionate!
PCP, in essence, is our class of doctory things. It is in PCP that we learn by what mode to ask patients interesting questions, learn that lungs interfere very loud noises if you tap-room on them and learn that admitting that you place a stethoscope on someone’s tummy not oblique after they’ve had a grain in powder, you might struggle to look them in the vigilance for the next few days. Jokes out of the heart, PCP comes around each week to remind us that there’s more to remedy than bioscience. To this end, PCP focuses on clinical skills, with a particular force of utterance on developing strategies to communicate with your patients effectively, which, y’apprehend, is kinda important!
Lectures and…pots! Pots pracs come two hours of histology/pathology using a computer program called SmartSparrow. Though verily quite useful, SmartSparrow does come for example a test of your resilience other than anything else. Pots, however, are pracs in what one. we spend an hour with one actual real-life, in-the-pulp, breathing doctor talking about some specimens from the structural science museum. These specimens tend to manifestation pathologies that we’ve discussed in the weeks precedent to the tute. Getting a occur to sit around and discuss the pathologies is daunting at rudimentary (especially considering my group is on point), but once you’re across the jitters, much like CSL, it’s a competent opportunity to flesh out ideas and actually see the stuff you learn in lectures.
The chief feature of Thursdays is Anatomy pracs. Broadly, there are two types: workshops and dissections. In workshops, we round of years around a number of stations, observing dissected carcass parts, looking at X-rays and CT scans at the computers, coloring organs onto each other and, attached some occasions, examining bones in the Anatomy Museum.
Dissection, forward the other hand, is pretty self-justificatory. Whilst it is certainly the covering that some people have some reservations initially, once they begin dissecting everyone seems to weaken a little and take advantage of the chance; fit they have. It is pretty harsh to leave dissection without feeling incredibly delightful that there are people out there who donate their bodies just such we can learn and, hopefully, subsist good doctors.
Some Fridays we receive what’s called Clinical Colloquium. What this really involves changes from class to class. Early on in the year they were added or less an opportunity to knit some loose ends and examine more content more deeply without the drag weight of actually having to remember it concerning an exam. More recently, however, we’ve had patients go to see us and tell us about their story. These sessions have been kind of like CSL mete with a human element. For me personally, they’ve been in fact important, as it serves as a reminder of wherefore I’m going to the struggle of med school. The reality is, Med is sanguinary hard so to actually see the reality that medicine can have on the amazing people who visit us is positively motivating.
