OzTREKK Director Jaime Notman is commonly in Australia welcoming OzTREKK students and hosting our annals OzTREKK Orientations Down Under. She’s besides practicing her left-hand driving ~ the agency of chauffeuring the OzTREKK Shuttle! To arrest her adventures for the rest of us stuck in the Great White (Freezing!) North, Jaime has agreed to rebuff in periodically with the Canadian Headquarters staff by way of email.
Here’s her next installment!
I be of opinion everyone has heard about my left-pass by ~-side-driving learning curve, but I officially have the consciousness of being pretty good about it. The driving portion is A-OK. The part in what place I have to have a certain convo in my head is round parking—like when I pull at a loss of a parking spot, I possess to remind myself to go onto the left. Otherwise it’s been, well, ordinary and uneventful. Just in case you were concerned!
OzTREKK Shuttle time!
Oh, nevertheless the windshield washers. They mysteriously extend off every time I attempt to form my signal.
And, in other exciting word, I also got my bag! :: delaying claps :: (For those of you who don’t be assured of, my bag and I did not arrive in Australia cheek by jowl. It happens!) It arrived Saturday death and it’s so nice to take clothes today! I had to dispose an outfit for yesterday (winter costume wouldn’t cut it) and a not many toiletries, but now I’m a dexterous camper.
I feel that the thrown away bags started a bit of a domino fact, though, because I didn’t be in actual possession of any clothes, I needed to fire and get some new shorts and a shirt. They’re indeed ugly (Kmart was the only order of importance open). So, begrudgingly, I buy the shorts and mosey forward.
Saturday was Griffith (more in a sec), ~-end on Sunday (as I have a filled suitcase) I woke up bright and premature and was all “OK, I’ve gotta fare for a run.” So I did. I tucked my iPhone in my bra strap and set out. Felt oddly tolerably great, actually. Then a few hours later, I extend to take a picture of somebody and realize my back camera is quite foggy. Can’t figure it through. I look again and realize there’s moisten under the lens. Only thing I could conformation is that it’s my emit moisture, from my run. So, now I don’t have a rear-facing camera.
Anyway, I design I’d give you a small update on the Griffith Orientation. So… we met the students at the Student Centre forward campus. Lots of partners and wives. I was in c~tinuance the plane with another student. He was winning.
We got a campus tour through a Griffith Mate (student volunteer) who was Canadian, and a Sri Lankan scholar, Tash, who is going into her third year at Griffith Medical School. She was astounding. She had a pass (it was Saturday) and thus we got a pretty good circuit of the med lecture halls and the med erection and gave everyone advice about changing placements, getting study notes and secrets to the PBL. She was verily great, absolutely lovely, and had lots of hard advice for our OzTREKKers.
After the round, we got in the van and for the Gold Coast weather wasn’t cooperating (wha??), we skipped the angle and chips on the (rainy) beach and went to a local surf club for some lunch. It was lofty: lots of chatting and fast friendships made. A connect of the students had a car (or a father with them) so they didn’t exigency the shuttle.
A little later I shuttled everyone to Pacific Fair (what one. is *enormous*) and they shopped to their hearts’ please highly.
Yesterday, as everyone didn’t stand in want of the van (they’re all quite settled!), I took it back and got a normal car for driving around. I figured though I’m here I’ll beef up on my familiarity with the region. Two places I wanted to upon out were the Gold Coast University Hospital and the Robina Institute of Health. So I tooted encircling for much of the day.
The Bond Institute of Health & Sport — selfie manner of writing
Now, I’m no doctor, however the Gold Coast University Hospital is like nothing I’ve ever seen. It provides loftily-quality treatment for patients while also offering world-class facilities for health research and teaching, allowing Griffith University students of healing art, pharmacology, dentistry, nursing and public hale condition to train in a genuine of medicine environment. The last time I was in this place we didn’t get a perfect tour—at least I didn’t esteem how absolutely enormous this complex / district is! Plus, because it’s unused, everything is shiny and glistening. I in reality can’t say it enough: stirring is simply an understatement.
Because, you be assured of, I know everything about medicine, I intention I’d take a spin end the hospital until someone told me to ~ by heart outta there. After getting a cupping-glass of java (the cafeteria is amiable in case you were wondering), I rightful sorta wandered and it all seemed real medicine-y which is what you desire, I suppose.
Then I went on the ~side to the Bond Institute of Health & Sport. I was total excited to take some pics because of our Australian Physiotherapy Schools Admissions Officer Krista McVeigh, limit without the rear-facing camera, I could merely take pictures selfie-style. But I didn’t wish to actually take a selfie, in like manner I’m standing in the domain trying to hide from the con~ lens while taking a picture immersing my head. The hardest part was whereas my brain couldn’t flip my actions property (everything was backwards), in the same state I’m looking at the riddle (my back to the building) and it took aye while I had to do the “OK, awning the camera up, no, no down… left…no, just.” I got one decent image but my phone isn’t allowing me to subjoin it.
When I fly to Melbourne, I command visit the Apple Genius Bar and hopefully fall some phone help.
Otherwise OzTREKK Orientations 2016 faculty of volition be the year of the selfie.
Stay tuned on this account that Jaime’s next blog!
