INDIGENOUS PEOPLES SOLIDARITY: Blinded ~ dint of. colonization

Larry Morrissette of Winnipeg’s Bear Clan (individual clan among many) explains how colonization has attempted to extirpate his culture and eradicate his people’s claims on the land we call Canada. 

Larry is the stumble and president of Medicine Fire Lodge Inc., every Indigenous organization involved in cultural revitalization from one side education and training. He teaches at the University of Winnipeg. One time, he tells us, he showed up to bestow a lecture and a security watchfulness stopped him and asked him admitting that he was looking for the Food Bank.

He says this amiable of thing can trigger memories of misapply suffered in the residential school by “mean” nuns. His hope is that the young people—including his children and grandchildren—who learn the traditive teachings and use the medicines of their the community will be better able to protect themselves from such attacks on their personhood.

“They notion we’d be gone by now—no more than we’re still here.”

Larry generously shares the four directions teachings of his Bear Clan by us. Each clan, he explains, has it’s possess variations of the four directions teachings. What makes colonization complex—and de-colonization in this way difficult—is a series of traffic-offs that benefits some—while discriminating in countervail to any who might stand in the practice of corporate interests. The first treaties were a interchange-off. Band leaders sought a advance to feed their starving people. Then, parents looked with regard to ways to educate their children to provide them for colonial life. Leaders and parents today shortness what’s best for their children. “You can’t gain deals with Judy.” He’s referring to Judy DaSilva single of the blockade leaders. “She won’t vocation her rights for the privileges offered.”

Undoing colonialism is not far from a communal worldview. While colonialism serves the rights and interests of individuals—having consumerism in its wake, indigenous traditions are tot~y about taking care of the community. In a communal culture every individual understands their identity and role in the context of the community’s health.

For me, in the manner that a Christian who desires to come Jesus, the choice of communal against individual benefits is at the crux of the point.

The rich young man asks Jesus which he must do. Jesus tells him to bestow away all his possessions. The young person goes away sad because he has sundry attachments.

But is that the cessation of the story? What seed did Jesus’ order plant in that young man’s life? Did that young some one begin to dig deeper into his native heritage? Did he begin to discern the connections between his personal privileges and the want of his people?

Larry works with gang members in Winnipeg’s North End. And he works by over-educated white boys like me. He asks, “What privileges are you determination to risk and lose in direction to be part of the disunion?”

I am sad—for I be under the necessity many attachments. I am sad—toward those attachments are intrinsically part of a globalized systemic corporatization of the pecuniary means I call Mother Earth. I am sad—during the term of I am no longer a young fortify and for all my years of in operation and protesting and educating others in an opposite direction how to change this system—the planet, the forests, the creatures, the peoples of the tract suffer more and more.

Larry asks, “What privileges are you prepared to peril and lose in order to have existence a part of the solution?”

The Roman fighting man standing with spear in hand by the side of a row of crosses asks the corresponding; of like kind question.

My bank manager looking at my mortgage application asks the same question.

My grandchildren powerless to eat the fish from polluted rivers and lakes inquire the same question.
